Sofia is the largest Bulgarian city and is the capital. It is also one of the oldest European cities with history dating back 7000 years. Sofia's mild climate and abundance of historical sites make it a popular vacation destination.

History
Sofia started out as a Thracian settlement. In 29 A.D. it was conquered by the Romans only to be destroyed by the Huns in 447. Sometime in the 6th century the city was rebuilt. From 809-1018 it was part of the first Bulgarian kingdom. During the period of 1018-1186 it was taken back by the Byzantines, however from 1186-1382 it became part of the second Bulgarian kingdom. The city which was formerly referred to as Sredets was named Sofia in 1376. The Ottomans gained control in 1382. Years later the Russians would win control in the Russo-Turkish War which took place from 1877-1878. In 1879 Sofia became the capital of Bulgaria.
Art & Museums
Sofia's National Museum of History has over 200,000 exhibits from Stone Age Bulgaria to the late 19th century. For those interested in archaeology the National Archaeological Museum has a collection of archaeological treasures which date back to prehistoric times. The National Ethnographic Museum features exhibits which will walk the visitor through the life of a Bulgarian during the 19th century.
Nightlife
Sofia has an abundance of restaurants serving both Bulgarian and European food. There are many taverns featuring the local folk music and dance. If you prefer you may take in a concert or visit the opera. Clubs may be found featuring all types of music from jazz to rock. Sofia also has quite a few discos and clubs which feature live shows. How to get there
Sofia is connected to a number of European cities and a few cities in North America by air. Most flights to Bulgaria land in Sofia. If you are travelling from other cities you may need to take a flight to another European airport with a connection to Sofia. You may reach Sofia by train or bus if travelling from Greece, Yugoslavia, Turkey, the Czech Republic and some Western European countries.
