York is a walled city in North Yorkshire, England. It is nicknamed "Capital of the North" and has a population of just under 200,000. It has a very rich history throughout its 2,000 years in existence.

History
The city was founded in 71 AD by the Romans, who first named it Eboracum. It wasn't until around 1000 AD that the city officially became known as York. George Hudson brought the railway to York in 1839. In 1963, a university was built in the city and named the University of York, which helped the city become much more prosperous. In June 2007, York was voted as the European Tourism City of the Year by European Cities Marketing, beating out 130 other European cities.
Art & Museums
There are 25 museums in York, including The Castle Museum, Richard III Museum, and Cliffords Tower, among others. There are enough museums in York to please anyone, and all are a must see. The York City Art Gallery is the most famous art gallery in York and is a permanent home to the art of William Etty, York's most controversial artist who is famous for his nudes.
Nightlife
There are many bars, clubs, and pubs in York. They include the Black Swan, York's oldest pub that dates back to the 16th century, and King's Arm Public House, whose top selling beer, Samuel Smith's, is brewed only a few miles away. Whatever your tastes, York has a wide range of pubs and clubs that are sure to spice up your nightlife.
How to get there
If you are going to fly to York, then Leeds and Bradford Airport is your best bet, because it is only a 40-minute drive from there to York. Though if you do want to fly into Heathrow Airport, they have a 50-minute shuttle from Heathrow to Leeds and Bradford. York is very easy to get around, whichever mode of transport you prefer. Over 15% of York residents use cycling as their main method of transportation, which saves loads of money on public transport. Walking is also a very easy way to get around in York, because the central area of the York City Centre is for Pedestrians only.
