Travel Guide Kiev with travel tips for Kiev

Kiev is the capital of Ukraine, as well as one of the leading industrial, cultural and educational centers of Eastern Europe. This metropolis of millions is home to many institutes of higher learning, as well as high tech companies and research facilities. Despite the presence of so many modern features, Kiev maintains a strong sense of history and is blessed with lovely architectural reminders of her past.

Kiev

History

This resilient city has endured many periods of prosperity and obscurity during its history. Established as early as the 5th century by Slavs, it has been invaded and controlled by Mongols, Poles, Lithuanians and Russians. It really came into prominence during the Russian Industrial Revolution of the late 19th century. After the dissolution of the Soviet Union, Kiev became the capital of the Republic of Ukraine in 1991.

Art & Museums

Kiev plays an important role in the Eastern Orthodox Christian church. The holy sites in the city, primarily Kiev Pechersk Lavra (the Monastery of the Caves) and the Saint Sophia Cathedral are huge draws for tourists and pilgrims alike, and have been recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The arts are an important part of Kiev's identity, and the Opera House, National Theater for the Dramatic Arts and Kiev Circus all hold performances throughout the year. There has been a major push by the Ukraine government to promote Kiev as a major tourist destination, and there have been many improvements to ensure that directive. The town's center has been gentrified and the areas around Khreshchatyk street and Independence Square are particularly tourist friendly.

Nightlife

Nightlife and clubbing in Kiev has picked up subtstantially in recent years. Western music can now be heard pulsating from most of the clubs and bars around the city. Some of the most popular venues are Arena and Ganesha which have a modern vibe and the Carribbean Club, a latin american dance club. Irish pubs O'Brians and O'Reillys serve up pints in a casual atmosphere.

How to get there

Public transportation inside the city proper includes the metro (underground), trolleybuses, buses, funiculars and trams. Travelers to Kiev by air arrive in one of two airports: the Boryspil Airport, which connects with most international airports, and the smaller Zhulyany Airport, which has mainly domestic flights. Railways connect Kiev with most other Ukranian cities.
