There are few cities in the western world that can rival Istanbul for history and beauty. Sitting atop the Bosphorus, joining the continents of Europe and Asia, Istanbul is a rich melange of cultures, religions and identities. The modern secular government has made great strides in allowing these identities to develop fully and the Istanbul of today is a vibrant, welcoming city.

History
Known throughout history as Byzantium, and later Constantinople, Istanbul has served as the capital of the Roman Republic, the Latin Empire and the Ottoman Empire. All of these past lives are still very much apparent today in the architecture and art of the city. Traveling through Istanbul, visitors have the opportunity to see the past unfold before their eyes, as Christian churches, Ottoman palaces and Muslim mosques all vie for attention under the city sky.
Art & Museums
Istanbul has much to see, but is compact and easily traversed by foot or taxi. Soaring high above Sultanahmet Square, the Hagia Sophia is perhaps the best known landmark. Christened by Emperor Justinian in 537 A.D., this marble church in Christian in origin. It has changed faiths throughout the ages, spending time as a Muslim mosque. However, it is has since reverted to its Christian roots. The well worn marble floors, trod upon for centuries, add to the beauty of the interior. Within walking distance and equally as impressive, is the Suleymaniye Mosque, also known as the "blue mosque". Built in the 15th century by Suleiman the Magnificent, it is an incredible achievement in architecture and open to the public. Topkapi Palace, built in the 16th century, was the home of the Ottoman sultans and is worth a trip for the harem rooms alone. The Grand Bazaar which has been the main marketplace of Istanbul for centuries is a must see for the gorgeous rugs and handicrafts sold there.
Nightlife
Being a predominantly Muslim city, Istanbul's nightlife is a bit more sedate than other international cities. However, the area of Taksim on the European side of the city, is a bustling, young area filled with restaurants and bars. Ortakoy, another popular area for hipsters, has two excellent dance clubs, Reina and Crystal where the beautiful people hang.
How to get there
The Ataturk International Airport connects Istanbul with most major cities. Subway, bus and taxi service are all plentiful within the city proper. Ferry service connects the European and Asian sides and runs regularly for a small amount.
