History

However, the most significant portion of its history began after the reconquest when the Christian monarchy solidified. It was not until the sixteenth century that the monarchy made Madrid its capital. What was especially distinctive about the nature of the Spanish government was that for many years Madrid served as a seat of government, but not as the hub of trade. Nonetheless, as the Spanish monarchy faced various political rumblings, its stronghold in Madrid tightened and the city began to grow and flourish in its own right. Madrid also became an important spot in the Spanish Civil War as well as under the rule of dictator Francisco Franco.
