Palma de Mallorca is a major city on the Balearic Islands off the coast of Spain. It is a coastal city of almost half a million citizens, making it one of the largest cities in Spain. It is the capital of the Baeleric islands, as well as a major tourist destination due to it's seaside location and amenities. History

The Balearic islands were originally settled by Celts and then Phonecians who used the island as a trading point, however these people were conquered by the Romans, who founded the city of Palma. The island remained under Roman control until the Byzantine period, when it was ultimately conquered by Muslims from north Africa. When the Caliphate was driven out of southern Spain, it became Christian and has remained part of Catholic Spain since. In recent years, it has expanded as a tourist destination due to it's seaside location, excellent beaches, and unique cuisine.

The great number of cultures who have occupied Palma have made it a great place for those interested in Mediterranean art through the years. It is home to a number of art museums, and the many churches in the city exhibit many religious artworks from the centuries. Persons who are interested in Spanish architecture should also visit Palma, as buildings from the Phonecian period to the Roman period to the Islamic period to the modern period are proudly on display, and Palma is home to unique pieces of architecture found nowhere else in the world.

Nightlife

Palma's transition into a major tourist destination has led to the development of a very advanced and successful night life. There are a great number of bars and other places to enjoy a drink, and there are both ones geared toward the tastes of foreigners and ones for those who want to drink in the unique culture as much as they do their wine. There are also a number of places to go dancing and meet people, and Palma's unique political and social history has led to unique cuisine that is highly recommended for those who love Mediterranean food.

How to get there

Palma is an island and thus can only be reached by boat or plane. It is possible to fly to the airport on Palma from Spain. However, most people take the ferry, as it is much less expensive and permits one to bring along a car. Car rental facilities on the island are limited.
