Travel Guide Ljubljana with travel tips for Ljubljana

Ljubljana, the capital city of the Republic of Slovenia, has a storied past, which reaches back to Greek mythology and Jason and the Argonauts. Jason traveled through this area of present-day central Europe during his return home after finding the golden fleece. This auspicious beginning led to the culturally rich and architecturally sublime city that exists today.

History

Populated since 2000 B.C., Ljubljana really did not hit the map until the Romans claimed it in 50 B.C. and began their usual gentrification. Positioned in a vulnerable area of the world, and surrounded by clashing Germanic and Slavic cultures, the city changed hands often throughout the ages. The Bohemians, Franks and Habsburgs all dominated Ljubljana at some point and their presence has left an indelible mark on the arts and architecture of the city.

Art & Museums

The historic center of Ljubljana contains most of the city's important landmarks. The old Castle, built in the 12th century, looms majestically over the Ljubljanica River. It was home to the Margraves, the nobility of the time. The town hall and many other residences have a Baroque appearance and were orginally constructed in the 16th century. The neighbourhood of the Chevaliers de la Croix, is home to the Ursuline Church, the Cankar House and the Philharmonic Society Building. The Museum of Modern Art and the National Gallery are both home to the most important Slovenian artists.

Nightlife

Most of the nightlife takes place in the city center on the banks of the river. There are any number of cafes and discos playing music until around midnight. Visitors still in the mood to party, should make their way to one of the clubs that is probably just getting going. Global, which is atop the Nama department store, is a fun place to spend an evening. The beautiful people like to hang out at Bachus, a three story club with a modern feel.
