Travel Guide Principality of Monaco with travel tips for Principality of Monaco
Monaco is one of the smallest independent countries in Europe. Most of the inhabitants that live there, or own vacation homes in the area are wealthy foreigners due to the relaxed tax laws of the country. It is ruled by the Grimaldi family but still protected by France and French is the national language. Along with its tax advantages for the rich Monaco is a tourist Mecca with lavish nightlife and many entertainment venues.

History
Monaco was founded as a colony in 1228 following a land grant by King Henry VI but it was named by the nearby Greek in the early 6th century and has a vibrant mythological history as well as cultural heritage. Up until the late 1700's Monaco was under British rule but in 1793 French revolutionaries gained control of the country and it remained under tight French government until 1814 when it became a principality of Sardinia. Like many European kingdoms the little country of Monaco was tossed about often until in 1911 it adopted its constitution that upheld the Grimaldi family as rulers of the sovereign country. In 1943 Monaco was once again invaded and captured by Italy and when they collapsed under their struggles with Germany Monaco was held by Nazi rule. Upon the end of the war France was granted Monaco and in 2002 signed a treaty that allowed the ruling party to continue even if no heirs were apparent. Monaco acts independently to this day but under the protection of the French government.
