Lisbon, which is the largest and wealthiest city of Portugal is also the capital. Lisbon is Located in the Western region of Portugal and lies at the point where the Tagus River flows into the Atlantic Ocean. The city is home to Monsanto Forest Park which is one of the largest urban parks in Europe.

History

The city is believed to date back to at least 1200 B.C. It was originally ruled by the Romans until the 5th century when it was taken over by Germanic tribes. The Moors captured Lisbon in the 8th century and in 1147 the Crusaders would take over the city for the Christians. In the 1800's Lisbon was invaded by Napoleon Bonaparte. During World War II Lisbon became known as a neutral port. 1n 1974 the Carnation Revolution, which was a military coup would change Lisbon to a democratic region.

 

Art & Museums

The Calouste Gulbenkian Museum is one of Lisbon's most popular museums. The museum which was renovated in 2001 has a large collection of Egyptian, Greek, Roman, Islamic, Asian and European art. The Ancient Art Musuem proudly displays European art from the 14th to 20th centuries. The Berardo Museum of Modern Art has a large collection of modern art which includes the work of modern artists such as Andy Warhol, Picasso and Dali. Lisbon is home to numerous private collections and specialty museums which specialize in articles such as tile, coaches, maritime and military collections which are a must see.

 

Nightlife

Lisbon has its fair share of bars, discos and nightclubs. There are also quite a few fado houses which specialize in entertaining you with local fado music and talent while you dine. Lisbon is also known as home to some of the world's greatest international DJ's. No matter what your listening pleasure you will find it in one of Lisbon's clubs in which you may hear everything from salsa to hip-hop.

 

How to get there

Lisbon is easy to reach by plane from Europe and the United States. There are daily flights out of New York to Lisbon. There is also a train that travels overnight from Madrid, Spain to Lisbon daily.
