History

Oslo, Norway has a long history, going back to 1000 A.D. when it was begun as a medieval town. Originally called Oslo, its name was changed by King Christian IV. In 1624, the town suffered a catastrophe as a fire burned down the village. At that time, King Christian IV decided to rename the town after himself, calling it Christiania. In 1877 the spelling was changed to Kristiania and finally in 1925, the name was changed back to its original name, Oslo. A majority of the original structures have been lost to fire and decay, but there are still remnants of the original buildings in sections of the town.

 

Art & Museums

Oslo, Norway is a museum lovers paradise, hosting over 50 museums and art galleries around town. A visit to the city centre will put you within easy walking distance to many attractions like the Akershus Castle (built in 1299), the Nobel Peace Center, and the Astrup Fearnley Museum of Modern Art. The Fram Museum is a local favorite, dedicated to some of the most famous explorers of the North Pole.

There are 3 airports which serve the greater Oslo area, with the closest being the Oslo Airport Gardermoen, just 45 km north of Oslo. The city has excellent bus and train terminals located in the heart of Oslo. Ferryboats and cruise ships also have direct routes to Oslo from Copenhagen, Kiel and Fredrickshavn.
