Rotterdam Netherlands is located in the west portion of the Netherlands on the banks of the Maas River. It is the second largest municipality in the Netherlands, and is a modern lively city. Rotterdam’s port is the largest in Europe, and in 2008, a record of 240 million tons of goods went through its Port Authority.

History
In 1325 Rotterdam (named after the dam in the River Rotte) became an official city. Because of its deep water harbor, Rotterdam became an important sea port for the region. In the 19th century, Rotterdam enlarged its port, and its economy and population boomed because of its trading port status. In 1940, the Germans invaded and almost totally destroyed the center of the city. During the 1950’s through the 1970’s, the city was completely rebuilt. As a result, Rotterdam is a very modern city with captivating modern architecture.
Art & Museums
A unique art museum in Rotterdam is the Museum Boijmans Van Beunigen, which displays medieval European Art through modern art.
The Maritime Museum showcases the history of Rotterdam’s port. Anchored by the museum building is an 1868 naval ship which takes visitors back in when such ships ruled the seas.
Museum Het Schielandshuis is a fascinating museum which provides insight into Rotterdam’s history and culture.
Rotterdam has several music and performance festivals: Motel Mozaique in April; Metropolis Festival, North Sea Jazz Festival, and Summer Carnival all in July.
Nightlife
Rotterdam has a wonderful variety of clubs, bars, discos, and restaurants. Every type of music is offered, so it is possible to find music to fit any taste. In the summer, every Wednesday night a roller skating party is held for all ages with a great after party.
How to get there
Rotterdam has a small airport with flights from London, Paris, Rome and Hamburg. However, it would be less expensive to fly into Amsterdam and rent a car or take a train to Rotterdam. From anywhere in Europe, trains travel into Rotterdam. Rotterdam is also linked to other European cities by Euro lines buses. If in England, ferries are an inexpensive way to reach Rotterdam.
