History

Emilia Romagna historically was a marshy, almost unlivable area that the local peoples worked hard to make into a rich and fertile farmland. Ruled at different times by Etruscans, Gauls, and Byzantines, it is home to the oldest university in Europe and an ancient culture that has been shaped by a variety of international influences. Its name refers to the names of the two main Roman highways that crossed the town, bringing a constant flow of new ideas.
