Cannes, France, is best known as the host of the annual Cannes Film Festival. Cannes is one of the best known cities of the French Riviera. History

Cannes, France has a history of conquests, and uprisings, even though it was nothing but a fishing village in the Mediterranean area from the 9th century until the middle of the 19th century. People have lived in Cannes since the second century BC, with the Oxybian tribe being the first inhabitants in the fishing village. When struggles broke out between those seeking to overcome the Roman Empire in 69 AD, there were battles until the 9th century. When Lord Brougham arrived in 1834, a number of aristocrats from England and Russia arrived to enjoy the warm winter climate.

The Cannes Film Festival will celebrate its 70th anniversary in 2017 and is held annually between May 14 to May 25 at the Palais des Festivals et des Congrès. There are many films in the festival, including twenty films competing for the Palme d'Or (English: Golden Palm), the highest prize at the festival; twenty other films from a variety of locations, special screenings, films not competing for the top prize, and others. One museum of note in Cannes, France is the Musée National de l'Automobile, with over 100 classic motorcycles and automobiles, including Rolls Royces, Ferraris, and Jaguars. The Music of the World Exhibition is in Canne’s castle.
