In 2008 the city was also named "The Most Livable City in the World." Copenhagen also holds the title of being one of the world's most environmentally friendly cities.

History

Copenhagen started as a fishing village in the 11th century. Eventually the city's harbor would turn it into a center of commerce. In 1658 the city managed to survive a siege by the Swedes and in 1807 the British bombarded Copenhagen and many were killed. The city did not begin to rebuild until 1850. During World War II Germans occupied Copenhagen. After the war the city began to grow and in the 1970s commuter trains were established to nearby cities and suburbs.

 

Art & Museums

Copenhagen is home to The National Museum and The National Gallery. The National Museum is Denmark's largest museum of archaeology and cultural history. The National Gallery is an art museum which features art from the 12th century to the present. Rembrandt, Matisse and Picasso are only a few of the featured artists. The Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek Museum is another famous Copenhagen museum which features classical Egyptian, Roman and Greek sculpture.

 

Nightlife

Copenhagen has a great deal to offer music lovers. In 2005, the Copenhagen Opera House was opened. The Opera House has been referred to as one of the most modern opera houses in the world. A new Copenhagen Concert Hall is scheduled to open in January 2009. Copenhagen is also famous for its many jazz clubs and is the home of "New Nordic Cuisine" and numerous Danish and International restaurants.

 

How to get there

You may fly into Copenhagen from most major cities. Many prefer to travel to destinations such as Paris or Oslo and take a scenic train trip to Copenhagen. It may also be possible to cruise to Copenhagen from some locations.
