Prague which is located on the Vltava River is the largest city of the Czech Republic. The city which was once the capital of Czechoslovakia is now the capital of the Czech Republic. Prague which dates back to the ninth century currently has an estimated population of 10,500,000. Today, the city is one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.

History
Prague began in the late 9th century as Vysehrad Castle. Eventually the city would be inhabited by Dukes and Kings of Bohemia. During the 14th and 15th century Prague flourished as a trading place for European merchants. In 1618 Prague experienced the “Thirty Year War” and in 1689 a great portion of the city was destroyed by fire.
During the 1700’s most of Prague was rebuilt and the industrial revolution of the 1800s had a strong impact. Czechoslovakia was created as a result of the end of World War I and Prague became the capital. During World War II Prague was occupied by Nazi Germany and most of the Jews left the city. In 1993 Czechoslovakia would split and Prague then became the capital of the Czech Republic.
Art & Museums
Prague’s National Museum was founded in 1818. Today, the museum consists of over 10 buildings and is believed to contain over 14 million pieces pertaining to natural science and history. The Prague Castle which is one of the world’s largest castles dates back to 870. The architecture of the castle represents every era of the last millennium. The Castle is home to a number of museums including a museum of Baroque art, a Toy Museum and a gallery of pictures of Prague Castle.
Nightlife
Prague after dark has numerous venues which are sure to suit your taste. There are numerous dance clubs which play everything from the 60’s to present. There are bars and pubs for those who want to quench their thirst and possibly enjoy a snack while listening to everything from jazz to rock. If opera and symphony are more your style then you won’t want to miss the State Opera House or the Czech Philharmonic.

Visitors to Prague may fly directly into the Prague airport from most locations. The airport handles approximately 250 intercontinental and private flights per day. If you are visiting Vienna and decide to visit Prague you may choose to take a scenic train ride.
