Travel Guide Nicosia with travel tips for Nicosia

Nicosia is both the capital and the largest city of the island republic of Cyprus. With a diverse history and a rich blend of Greek, Turkish, and Cypriot culture, Nicosia is an ideal vacation destination for people seeking culture and something out of the ordinary. A balmy Meditteranean climate makes it easy to enjoy the many activities in the area, which include sightseeing, sports, shopping, and attending cultural attractions. Because the city, along with the island of Cyprus itself, is divided into a Turkish area and a Greek area, the United Nations maintains a buffer zone between the two territories.

History

Nicosia has a rich and vibrant history. It originally was a small and unimportant town with a mixture of Roman and Hellenic cultures. Threats to the coastal areas from neighboring nations forced Cyprians to create their major city in the interior of the island, and Nicosia soon became a thriving metropolis as well as a political and commercial center. It was occupied by Frankish crusaders, and then by the Ottomans, who left a strong Turkish presence on the island that exists to this day. In the twentieth century, violence broke out between the Greek and Turkish residents, who have since divided the island and entered into a peaceful, side-by-side existence that is ensured by a constant United Nations presence.

Art & Museums

The most notable art in Nicosia is its architecture. A Venetian wall runs through the city, and Venetian influenced buildings such as the Municipal Theater can be found throughout as well. There are historical mosques and authentic Gothic cathedrals. Nicosia is also known for its museums, including the Byzantine Museum in the Archbishop's Palace, which house a stunning array of rare art and artifacts.

Nightlife

Nicosia has a wide range of bars and nightclubs for people seeking night time entertainment. Nostalji is a popular bar with live musical performances at night. Babylon features rock music and a fun environment. Octana and Basin-sen are favorites among tourists looking for a more Turkish ambience.

How to get there

Nicosia International Airport is not currently operating due to its position in the UN Buffer Zone, but the Larnaca International Airport on the Greek side of the city is fully functional. Roadways link the city to other metropolitan areas in Cyprus.
