History

Like much of Croatia, the Kvarner Region has had a diverse history with influences from a variety of cultures. From the prehistoric peoples that inhabited the area to Roman, Hellenic, Slavic, Hungarian and German residents, Kvarner's position as a major sea port have allowed it to interact with and live with people from all over the world. Around the first century AD, the area was occupied by Romans. It was later occupied by the Ostrogoths, then by Charlemagne. Charlemagne introduced Christianity to the Slavic inhabitants of Kvarner. It later became part of the Croatian-Hungarian kingdom.

 

Arts & Museums

The town of Opatija is home to the Museum of Croatian Tourism, which celebrates the many activities of the Kvarner area and the people who have visited through the ages. There is also a Monastery Museum in Otok Krk. Architecture lovers will appreciate the wide range of architecture from a variety of influences. In many places, medieval buildings are still being used with very few modifications.

 

Nightlife

The nightlife in Kvarner is so vibrant that residents of nearby cities often make treks to the small islands and towns to partke of it. The town of Rijeka is known for several fun pubs with inexpensive drinks and seasonal live music, while the town of Novalja has several cosmopolitan style nightclubs with techno music and dancing.

 

How to get there

The Kvarner Region can be reached by air via the Rijeka airport. Both a bus service and a train system run from Zagreb to Rijeka, and ferries connect the inhabited islands with each other and with the mainland.
