History
Region Istria has a long history, thanks to its prime location along the Adriatic. There have been artifacts discovered in the region that suggest that Region Istria has been in inhabited before civilization had solidified. It is thought that Istria was likely a place where various cultures had interaction, thanks to its ports and central location in southern Europe. The region grew as a settlement under Roman rule, and the most significant growth occurred in the area of modern day Pula. After Rome, Region Istria saw several ruling kingdoms, most notably the Venetians in the fourteenth century. Istria changed hands more times, well into the twentieth century, until the majority of the region was finally considered part of modern day Croatia.
Arts and Museums
Though many of the towns in Region Istria have a historic offering of attractions for visitors to enjoy, there are a few that stand out. The most popular is probably the Roman-style amphitheater, which is located in Pula. This amphitheater is well preserved and is still used for concerts and gatherings today. Another popular stop is the Euphrasian Basilica, located in Porec. For those looking for museums, Pula offers the widest selection in the entire region, including an Archeological museum as well as an ethnographic museum.
Nightlife
Since Istria is well developed for tourist, each town offers its own selection of nighttime attractions. However, for guests looking for the best places to party, Pula is definitely the place to be. While the downtown offers a handful of bars and clubs, it is places on the outskirts that draw the biggest crowds, such as in Premantura or Verudela.
How to Get
It is to arrive by air directly to Region Istria through the airport in Pula. From there, there is some public transportation available. The road system is also easy to navigate to travel from place to place within the region.
