Bulgaria is an Eastern European country bordering the river Danube to the north, Serbia and Macedonia to the west, Turkey and Greece to the south and the Black Sea to the east. Bulgaria is a very old country, tracing its origins back to the middle ages. In the 1930s, Bulgaria became an Eastern Bloc Communist country and remained so until the democratic revolutions of 1989 and 1990, when Bulgaria transitions from communist party rule to a more democratic and capitalistic government.

History

The First Bulgarian Empire dated from 632 to 1018, and had a strong influence in terms of culture and custom on the people of Eastern Europe and other Slavic societies. The Second Bulgarian Empire lasted from 1185 to 1422, when the Ottoman Empire seized control. In 1878, at the end of the Russo-Turkish war, Bulgaria achieved independence from the Ottoman Empire and became a constitutional monarchy, the third Bulgarian Empire. In 1945, after World War II, Bulgaria became part of the Soviet Union, under communist rule, and remained so until 1990, when the country switched to democracy and capitalism. IN 2004, Bulgaria became a member of NATO, and became a member of the European Union in 2007.

Bulgaria is a mixture of mountainous forest and coastal plains. The country has over 500 rivers, including the famous Danube. With a history stretching back to 500 BC, Bulgaria has numerous historic and Neolithic attractions for tourists, including the Panayuriste Treasure. Bulgaria has a number of large cities which blend the historic with the modern, providing many entertainment and sightseeing opportunities as many businesses take advantage of the numerous tourism opportunities, including some of the best ski resorts in Europe.

Bulgaria has long been a good region for agriculture and as a result, there is a wide variety of foods grown in the country, leading to a diverse cuisine. A signature characteristic of Bulgarian cuisine is the salads served with every meal and the traditional pastries which will sometimes contain charms for good luck. In the cities, there is any number of modern and traditional restaurants offering a wide range of cuisines.
