History
The province of Salzburg was originally settled by Celts that mined for salt in the current salt mines. For nearly 1,000 years beginning in the 8th century, Salzburg was the home of many autocratic archbishops. The Archbishop Wolf Dietrich von Raitenau, who had a passion for Renaissance, initiated Salzburg’s famous architecture and large squares, palace courtyards, and grand cathedrals were built over the 16th and 17th centuries. The province of Salzburg was transferred back and forth between Bavaria, Germany, and Austria, but it finally was taken back by Austria for federal status in 1945.

How to get there
There are many railways stations in the province of Salzburg with widespread railway connections. The city of Salzburg is the center for trains traveling south through the Alps to Italy. Salzburg Airport W.A. Mozart is the only airport. There are many trolley buses, taxis and buses throughout the province.
