Austria

History

From the beginnings of civilized Europe, Austria has been a crossroads and a battleground. From 788 when Charlemagne conquered Austria to 1278 when Rudolf Hapsburg won a decisive battle, Austria repeatedly was conquered and changed rulers. However, by the end of the 12th century, an important trade route was organized along the Danube River, and the Hapsburgs established an empire which maintained its dominance in Europe for over 600 years. In World War I, Austria was one of Central Powers, and their loss resulted in political turmoil and economic devastation. The monarchy was dissolved. In World War II, Germany annexed Austria. After the War, Austria swore neutrality and became a democratic republic.

Culture and Sightseeing

Austria is full of fascinating places to visit, but three must-sees are Vienna, Salzburg, and the Alps. Vienna, the capital of Austria, has elegant castles, such as the Schonbrunn, which is often called the Versailles of Austria. The Vienna Opera House and the Hofburg Palace, where the Vienna’s Boy Choir sings, are famous for their musical presentations. In picturesque Salzburg, the birthplace of Mozart, the Hellbrunn Palace and Mirabell Palace boast lovely architectural details, graceful fountains, and enchanting gardens. The Austrian Alps are famous for their superb skiing opportunities, but they are also delightful in the summer because of the spectacular scenery and outdoor adventures available.
